The Welsh Terrier — affectionately known as the Welshie — is one of the oldest terrier breeds in the world and one of the oldest breeds native to the British Isles, with a history in Wales stretching back at least 500 years. The breed is believed to be descended from the Old English Black and Tan Terrier, a now-extinct working terrier type that was widespread across Britain in the medieval period, and Welsh Terrier-type dogs are depicted in Welsh art and described in Welsh literature as far back as the 15th century. The Welsh Terrier was originally bred in the rugged mountains and valleys of North Wales to hunt fox, otter, and badger — working both above and below ground in the rocky terrain of Snowdonia and the surrounding hills. The breed's dense, wiry, weather-resistant double coat in black and tan — with a black saddle over the back and rich tan on the legs, chest, and face — is virtually identical in color and texture to the Airedale Terrier and Lakeland Terrier, reflecting their shared ancestry from the Old English Black and Tan. The Welsh Terrier is compact and square in build, standing about 15 inches at the shoulder — large enough to work with hounds but small enough to go to ground. The breed is known for its bold, friendly, and spirited character — alert and game like a true working terrier, but with a more even temperament and less aggression than many other terrier breeds.
